Most Dutch store owners have no idea this applies to them.
What the EAA actually requires
The European Accessibility Act covers all digital products and services sold to EU consumers, e-commerce included. For online stores, that means your homepage, product pages, cart, and checkout need to be accessible to people with disabilities.
Practically, this includes:
- Error messages tell users exactly what went wrong and how to fix it
- Colour contrast between text and background meets minimum ratios
- All buttons and links have clear, descriptive labels
- Forms can be completed using only a keyboard
- Images have meaningful alt text
These aren't edge cases or niche requirements. They're fundamental patterns that are broken by default in most Shopify stores.
